Ep. 5: How to Support Food Security with Agricultural Trade

In our fifth episode, we interview Dr Jonathan Brooks, Head of the Agro-Food Trade and Markets Division at The Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).

Jonathan has been studying agricultural trade for almost three decades. He joined the OECD in 1999 as a Senior Economist and today leads the Agro-Food Trade and Markets Division that, amongst other things, analyses the links between agricultural policies and markets.

He began studying general economics at the London School of Economics (LSE) and then earned a PhD in Agricultural Economics from the University of California – Davis. For his dissertation, he looked at the political economy of US agriculture and the impact of campaign contributions on voting outcomes in congress.

We discuss a broad range of topics including how he became interested in agricultural economics, his work at the OECD, the impact of trade on food security, agricultural trends for Latin America and the OECD’s take on the decline of prices paid to farmers for raw materials as a ratio of the final prices paid by consumers (also discussed in episode three).
